Lamar runs past Roadrunners on the road

September 1, 2013

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Kimmy Albeno became the first Lamar soccer player to score 20 career goals as she helped the Cardinals post a 3-1 win over UTSA on the final day of the UTSA Classic on Sunday.

The win snapped a modest two-game losing streak for the Cardinals. Lamar ended the classic with a 1-1 record after dropping a 3-0 decision to South Dakota State on Friday.

“We bounced back after a disappointing effort on Friday,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We dug down and found a way to win. This was a good victory for us.”

Albeno put Lamar (2-2-0) up just 5:48 into the game, firing a shot past UTSA goalkeeper Bubba Makela from inside the penalty area, converting a pass from Taylor Mitchell. That was Albeno’s third goal of the season and the only scoring of the first half. The junior from Bellflower, Calif., has 47 career points, two shy of the school record of 49 held by Lisa Hance.

UTSA (1-3-0) got on the board 2:34 into the second half when Taylor Wingerden deposited a rebound past LU netminder Bailey Fontenot. The Cardinals responded a little less than 11 minutes later when Jennifer Yacuta put Lamar up for good on an assist from Mitchell. It was Yacuta’s third goal of the season and her second game-winning goal.

Stefanie Miroballi closed out the scoring when she rifled a shot off the crossbar from 30 yards out with 13:40 remaining. Jannet Hernandez picked up the assist.

Fontenot finished with five saves for Lamar, which claimed its first-ever victory over UTSA. The Cardinals had been 0-5-1 against their former Southland Conference rivals.

Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Southern University in a non-conference game at the Lamar Soccer Complex. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
