LSU Falls in Road Finale at #16 Georgia, 2-0

October 19, 2014

The Tigers (5-10-2, 1-6-1 SEC) dropped their fourth-straight match in Southeastern Conference play this season and their second-straight match against the Bulldogs (10-3-1, 5-2-1) in the series.

It marked LSU’s fourth match this season against a nationally-ranked opponent as the Bulldogs kicked off with a No. 16 national ranking in the latest Soccer America Top 25 poll released this past Tuesday. Georgia owns a No. 17 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Top 25 and a No. 21 ranking in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 also released this week.

The Tigers nearly took an early lead in the contest through their strike partnership of sophomore Summer Clarke and freshman Jorian Baucom as the visitors came out firing from the opening kickoff.

In the eighth minute of play, Clarke collected possession in the middle of midfield and dribbled past two Bulldog defenders for an open strike from 14 yards in the left side of the penalty area that whistled past Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell and just inches wide of the right post. Baucom followed in the 16th minute when she was slipped through by Clarke for a 20-yard strike that was also fired just wide of the right post.

The Bulldogs found the breakthrough just 10 minutes later following a quick free kick taken 40 yards from goal. Defender Mariel Gutierrez received the free kick and slid a through ball to striker Rachel Garcia running to the left post as Garcia chipped home her fourth goal of the season to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute of play.

The home side doubled its advantage off of a corner kick in the final minutes of the opening half with All-SEC candidate Gabby Seiler netting her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 41st minute. Forward Kelsey Killean played a failed clearance by the Tigers back into the box as Seiler weaved her way through the LSU defense for an eight-yard strike inside the top-left corner of the near post and a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Tigers were unable to close the gap after the restart with midfielder Natalia Gomez-Junco firing the only shot on target in the second half from 14 yards that forced a diving save from Hogrell in the 71st minute.

After wrapping up their final road swing of the campaign at Georgia on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers will return home next weekend to open up a three-game homestand to wrap up the regular season as they will play the Kentucky Wildcats on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT at the LSU Soccer Stadium. They will then play host to No. 4-ranked Florida on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. CT on the SEC Network+.
