October 31, 2015

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team scored a goal in each half, tying the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season champion Monmouth Hawks, 2-2, on Senior Night.

The Red Foxes finished the 2015 regular season 7-8-2 overall and 5-3-2 in MAAC play and will enter the postseason tournament as the no. 3 seed. Marist has earned a first round bye with a top five finish during the regular season and will play the winner of the matchup between no. 6 Siena and no. 11 Niagara.

"(Monmouth) is 22nd in the country for a reason, but I thought we played well tonight and it was an even game," head coach Matt Viggiano said. "It was a lot of fun. Those are the games you love to play in. The guys stepped up tonight, competed and got a result."

Making his collegiate debut in goal, sophomore Tyler Utheim made nine saves to keep the match deadlocked at 2. Shots were 19-18 in favor of the Hawks.

Senior Connor Preece got the Red Foxes on the board first, heading in a corner kick from classmate Steven Arraiano just under three minutes into the contest. In the 16th minute, Monmouth junior midfielder Miguel Alves fired his first of two goals in the contest and tied the score at 1.

Early in the second half, freshman Cameron Harr fired his team-leading eighth goal of the season from 15 yards out on a feed to the middle from junior Mario Vukadinovic. Freshman Bruce Jeter had three shots in the second half, but did not find the back of the net.

Utheim made a save in each overtime and Monmouth junior Eric Klenofsky tallied eight saves by the end of the night for his fourth draw of the season.

Marist will begin postseason play in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Championships at 11 a.m. Nov. 6 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The Red Foxes await the winner of the first round matchup between Siena and Niagara, which kicks off the tournament at 11 a.m. Nov. 5.
