Marist men beat Adelphi
September 10, 2010
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sophomore Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) of the Marist men’s soccer team notched a goal in the eighth minute of a non-conference match against Adelphi (2-1) on the road Thursday night. The goal lifted the Red Foxes to a 1-0 win over the Panthers and snapped a two-game losing streak.
Despite being outshot in the match, 11-9, the Red Foxes were the only team able to find the back of the net during the match. Senior goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) stopped four shots for his first shutout of the season.
“We beat a good Division I team tonight,” Head Coach Matt Viggiano said. “We gutted one out, and I think this could be the best win we have had since I’ve been at Marist. This shows what we are capable of, and is a big morale booster heading into Virginia.”
Marist (2-2) got out of the gate quickly as Brossard took a pass from junior Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.), who moved from right to left. Witkowski fed Brossard and he found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Brossard’s goal was the first allowed by Adelphi this season.
In the second half, Pilla made all four of his saves to preserve the clean sheet. He made a pair of saves in the final 6:20 of the match, in addition the Marist defenders blocking a shot.
Prior to the match, the host Panthers received recognition in the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) National Poll. This week Adelphi earned 16 votes in the poll, which was released on Sept. 7. Additionally, it was the team’s first home loss since Sept. 29, 2007.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14 against the University of Virginia, the reigning national champions, in Charlottesville, Va. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
