McGlynn, Schwarz Secure MAAC Weekly Honors

September 2, 2019

LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the first time in three years, Siena Soccer has captured both the MAAC Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week awards. Senior midfielder Conor McGlynn earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week acclaim, while sophomore midfielder Samuel Schwarz was heralded as the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the opening week of the 2019 season.

This marks the first time that the Saints have laid claim to both the MAAC’s Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week honors in the same week since Junior Rosero (Offensive) and Matt Crisafulli (Rookie) did so on Sept. 26, 2016. Additionally, this is the second consecutive week in which Siena has boasted the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, and the second straight season in which a Saint has received the first MAAC Rookie of the Week award for the season. Crisafulli earned the final MAAC Offensive Player of the Week award last year, while Aaron Martin was the conference’s initial MAAC Rookie of the Week in 2018.

McGlynn and Schwarz led Siena to a 1-1 opening weekend on the road in Pennsylvania, fueled by a 4-2 triumph at Northeast Conference preseason favorite Saint Francis (PA) Sunday afternoon. The four goals scored matched the program’s most in a contest in five years dating back a 5-1 win at Sacred Heart on Sept. 9, 2014, and the three second half scores tied for the most since tallying four in the second half of a 7-1 thrashing of Saint Peter’s on Oct. 24, 2010.

A two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week en route to unanimous MAAC All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman in 2016, McGlynn garners MAAC Offensive Player of the Week acclaim for the first time in his career. The Middle Village, New York native scored a career-high four points in the victory over the Red Flash. McGlynn factored in the scoring in each of Siena’s first three goals, which he capped by tallying the game-winner on a penalty kick. He assisted on each of the first two scores of the afternoon to move into a tie for fifth place in program history with 14 career assists.

Schwarz opened the scoring in the win at Saint Francis by notching his first collegiate goal to highlight his first collegiate weekend of action. The Traunstein, Germany product also paced the Saints with a team-high five shots in the victory.

McGlynn, Schwarz, and Siena conclude their season-opening three-match road trip Friday night at 7 p.m. at Army West Point, before returning to the Capital Region for their home-opener Sunday vs. Bryant at 1 p.m. on Hickey Field.
