Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier tonight, the Adelphi University men's soccer team played host to the Bearcats of Binghamton University. A goal in the opening minutes by the visitors forced the Panthers to play down from the get-go. Two more goals by Binghamton proved to be too much to overcome as Adelphi fell by a score of 3-0. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-7 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 4-5.

Although both teams took seven shots in the opening half, the Bearcats controlled the pace of the offense and possession of the ball for a majority of the time. Four of Binghamton's shots were on goal compared to just one for the Panthers.

In the ninth minute, Adelphi's first opportunity came when they were awarded a free kick about 20 yards out and offset left of the goal. Taken by Domenico Parelli, he hooked a shot around the defensive wall of players, but his attempt sailed just high of the net.

Jake Keegan started the scoring for the Bearcats as he took a pass from teammate Steven Celeste from the top center of the box and sailed the ball just inside the right post to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

In the 15th minute, Adelphi looked as if they could even the slate when Matt Delph managed to pick up the ball in a swarm of green jerseys within the box and did his best to get a clean shot off, but was blocked twice. Teammate Brandon Stoneham was also in the mix in the same sequence and managed to get a difficult shot off, but unfortunately was met with the same result.

In the 25th minute, Binghamton struck again, this time by Robbie Hughes who scored an unassisted goal on a half-volley from the top of the box to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Panthers came out aggressive and maintained possession of the ball for the better part of the opening ten minutes.  Alejandro Penzini and Adrian Sundquist and each recorded a shot, but were both off the mark.

Stoneham had an opportunity as well, but as he streaked up the middle and into Bearcat territory, Binghamton keeper Chris Hayden came out and made a hard slide at the ball to clear it out. In the process, he clipped Stoneham but there was no call made.

In the 69th minute, the Bearcats put the finishing touch on the 3-0 score in the 70th minute, as Hughes scored his second goal of the game and of the season off a header from an Adam Whitehead pass.

The Panthers held a 12-11 shot advantage, but the Bearcats put six of them on goal while Adelphi only had three. Ahmad Salamah made three saves in the loss while Stefano Frantelizzi made one stop, played 45 minutes and got the win. Chris Hayen played the second half for Binghamton and made two saves.

Next up, the Panthers will travel to Durham, New Hampshire to take of the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday September 26th at 4 pm.
