YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's soccer team dominated the match, but had to settle for a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State on a goal by Mackenzie Schill Friday night at Farmers National Bank Field.
 
The Panthers (7-0-0, 1-0-0 Horizon League) outshot the Penguins (1-6-2, 0-1-0 Horizon League) by a count of 19-1, getting just a lone goal past goalie Kate McEachern, who finished with 10 saves in the match.
 
The score came at the 33:04 mark and against the run of play. Rachel Phillpotts took away the ball and found Schill alone at the top of the box after a Milwaukee break was cleared of apparent danger. Schill took a couple of dribbles and slotted the shot inside the left post for what turned out to be the game-winner.
 
The victory improves the MKE unbeaten streak to 27 games (23-0-4) and ups the program to 22-2-1 all-time in Horizon League openers.
 
Freshman Elaina LaMacchia was called on for just one save on the night, but it was a big one. It came in the 78^th minute, making a leaping attempt to punch a tough shot from YSU just over the bar and keep the game in Milwaukee's hands.
 
The squad really turned up the accuracy in the second half looking for that second goal that never came. In a 10-minute span starting in the 58^th minute, the Panthers took six shots and forced three corner kicks, yet couldn't break through for the insurance tally.
 
Jelena Sever had a near-miss, nearly converting a Gaby Schwartz corner kick in the 62^nd minute. Haley Johnson was denied in the 66^th and it was Sever again a minute later, stopped brilliantly by McEachern after Sever had spun around to get open following a Julia Barajas through ball from the left wing.
 
Milwaukee made a final push late, only to see a backline defender knock Taylor Hattori's shot off a corner kick away in the 89^th minute and then have Johnson's header saved after the ball got played back in.
 
Outside of the lopsided 19-to-1 shot differential, MKE also saw an 11-1 lead in shots on target and forced nine of the 12 corner kicks in the match. Sever paced the offense with four shots; Johnson and Schill finished with three apiece.
 
Up next, the team will not have much time off to prepare for Marquette, with the rain-delayed game from earlier this fall now set for Monday at 7 p.m.
