Mount Blanks Wagner, 3-0

October 15, 2013

Emmitsburg, MD. (October 11, 2013) – A total team effort with three different players scoring and a combined shutout gave the Mount women's soccer team a 3-0 win over Wagner at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday night. Emma BlairRagan Cote and Kate Murphy found the back of the net for the Mount, which improved its record to 3-6-2 and 1-1 in the Northeast Conference.

With the offense connecting all night, the backline also turned in a strong performance led by Rachel Bourne and her two first-half saves and Vicky Cocozza, who turned away eight Wagner shots to help the Mount to its third shutout of the season.

The Mount tested Wagner (8-4-1, 1-2 NEC) with four shots in the first 17 minutes including one by Jackie Corley that hit the crossbar.

Earning her first start of the season, Blair made the most of her opportunity with the Mount's first goal of the game in the 21st minute. Blair fired a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the goal for her second game winner of the season.

Cote came within inches of extending the Mount's advantage to 2-0, but her shot in the 38th minute rang off the crossbar as the home side continued to apply the pressure.

Just five minutes later, Cote was able to beat Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy on the ground off a pass behind the Seahawks' backline from Jackie Glanfield. It was Cote's first goal this season and Glanfield's team-high third assist.

The Mount held a 9-3 advantage on shots in the first half before Wagner turned the table in the second half and took 11 shots to the Mount's four. From the eight shots that Wagner put on target in the second half, Cocozza was able to make every save.

After six early shots by Wagner in the second half, the Mount was able to put the game away with an insurance goal on Kate Murphy's first tally of the season off a free kick from 25 yards away. The senior defender soared a shot that sailed over Marcy's head and into the goal in the 75th minute.

The rest of the way, Wagner took four more shots, but was never able to breakthrough as the Mount preserved the shutout.

On Sunday, the Mount will look to make it two wins in a row with a game at Robert Morris at 2:30 p.m.

NOTE: The Mount improves to 12-9 versus Wagner in the all-time series.
