COMMERCE, Texas -- Payton Fookes blasted in her second game winning of the season to lift Midwestern State to a 1-0 result over Texas A&M-Commerce in double overtime Saturday at Lion Soccer Field.

"We're in a really good place right now," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We're consistently playing good soccer and creating chances. I'll take that any time of year."

The Mustangs won for the second time in the rain to improve to 2-6-2 on the season and to 2-2-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

Freshman Stevie Harris forced a turnover in the Lions' defensive third in the 109th minute that was collected by Fookes, who faked a shot and pushed it forward before launching the wet ball past A&M-C goalkeeper Tracey Rogers.

The sophomore from Wichita Falls also notched the game winner in MSU's other win of the campaign earlier this month at Incarnate Word.

But the Mustangs had to endure a strong start by the Lions, who owned a 10-3 edge in shots over the opening half of play.

"They really took it to us and we were really on our heels," Trimble said. "They played very direct so the fact we made it to halftime scoreless was a key point."

Texas A&M-Commerce's Anitra Wright blew the Lions' best chance to score in the opening half as she collected a carom after MSU goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth slipped in a puddle at the top of the box.

But Wright's shot found Mustangs' defender Berklee Dressler to keep the match scoreless.

"I was proud of the girls," Trimble said. "Mickey (Brown) and Maddie (Fraser) played very well. Maddie won a lot of balls in the air and gave us a lift."

Midwestern State takes on Texas Woman's University Sunday afternoon in Denton. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Texas A&M-Commerce slipped to 2-6 and 1-4.
