NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It hadn’t gone unnoticed among the upperclassmen on the Yale women’s soccer team that freshmen had scored the Bulldogs’ first six goals of the season entering Friday night’s game with Vermont. “We were joking about it the other day,” Yale head coach Rudy Meredith said. “They brought it to my attention, but believe me, I knew.” As the old saying goes, talk is cheap, and a pair of veterans made sure it changed against the Catamounts. Junior Kristen Forster scored late in the first half, and senior Enma Mullo tallied the game-winner midway through the second half as Yale edged Vermont 2-1 on a chilly night at Reese Stadium. Both Bulldog goals were pretty. Georgiana Wagemann took advantage of a Catamount turnover and sent a nifty through ball to Forster, who slipped a shot just inside the near post with 38 seconds left in the first half. It looked like that might be all Yale would need. The Bulldogs outshot UVM 8-1 in the first 45 minutes and had a big edge in play. The tide, though, started to turn. Vermont (2-4-2) picked up the intensity in the second half and got the tying goal when Alexa DeMaio ripped a free kick into the top of the net from just outside the box at 58:33. The Bulldogs answered 16 minutes later. Frannie Coxe sent a long cross to Mullo, who took two dribbles and fired a shot inside the near post at 74:17. “I was really happy with how we kept fighting after they tied it,” Meredith said. The Catamounts finished with a 13-12 edge in shots, but Yale goalkeeper Adele Jackson-Gibson made six saves to earn the victory. The Bulldogs (3-2-2) have only one more tune-up – Sunday at Boston University - before their Ivy League opener at Princeton on Sept. 24. “We’ve tried a lot of different things so far, but I think we’ve figured out what we want to do,” Meredith said. “Sunday against BU will kind of be a dress rehearsal.” The Terriers will pose a big challenge. BU is coming off an impressive 3-0 victory over Harvard on Wednesday night. The Terriers also have a 2-0 victory over then No. 8 Portland and a 1-1 tie with then fourth-ranked Boston College on their resume. Kickoff in Boston is slated for 2 p.m.
