No. 10 UCSD Women Hold Off CSUDH on the Road

September 23, 2017

CARSON, Calif. - The No. 10 University of California San Diego women's soccer team suffered a slight scare but ultimately used a Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) brace to trudge past Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Friday night at Toro Stadium.

With the victory, first-place UC San Diego improved to 6-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.

In the ninth minute, Katie O'Laughlin (Carlsbad/Pacific Ridge School) knocked a ball over the top by freshman teammate Caitlin McCarthy (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) into the bottom right corner of the goal, but the flag was up for offside. O'Laughlin had another strong effort later that was parried away nicely by Michelle Tuiaea.

UCSD cracked the scoreboard in the 22nd minute as McCarthy sent Reilly in one-on-one on the left edge of the box, with the junior forward easily rounding the goalkeeper with one right-footed touch, and slotting into the empty net with her left, for her third on the year. Junior winger Summer Bales intercepted a pass along the left sideline and with her second touch, played it forward to McCarthy. Both Tritons were awarded an assist, Bales her first of the season and McCarthy her second.

Cal State Dominguez Hills nearly equalized in the 38th as a free kick from the right diagonal was headed on goal at the far post by Louise Kallin, with UCSD's Angelica Ramos going down to her left to make a great save. The rebound was shot off the underside of the crossbar by Katrina Cohen, and cleared away out of danger.

Moments later, at 39:35, it was indeed 1-1. Kallin's cross from the right was headed into her own net by redshirt sophomore holding central midfielder Natalie Saddic (San Diego/UC Davis/Torrey Pines HS) as she and Ramos converged on the ball, going down as an own goal.

Shortly after the second-half restart, at 51:31, order was restored, and in grand fashion, as Reilly sliced through the center of the Toro defense on a spectacular solo run, coolly shooting into the bottom right with her right foot after earning herself another one-on-one with Tuiaea. It was, accurately, credited as an unassisted score.

Ramos, a redshirt sophomore, was not credited with a save in the UCSD net despite the first-half stop. Making an impressive college debut, Tuiaea had seven in all.

The Tritons nearly had some breathing room in the 57th when Tuiaea made a fingertip save on McCarthy's header from a Jordyn McNutt (San Diego/University City HS) cross. UCSD actually held CSUDH without a single shot attempt in the second half, and wound up with a 22-4 advantage on the night.

UCSD goes right back up to Los Angeles this Sunday morning, Sept. 24, for a rematch of the 2016 CCAA Tournament final with Cal State LA (4-1-2, 2-0-1 CCAA) at 11:30 a.m. The Tritons took both meetings a year ago by the identical final score of 2-0.

Triton Notes: The Tritons have won 17 consecutive CCAA contests and 23 in a row against CCAA opposition, since a 1-0 loss at Sonoma State on Oct. 18, 2015 ... UCSD has held a 62-6 scoring advantage in those 23 games, and trailed in just one ... True freshman Delaney Whittet earned her first collegiate start, at left back, with Aimee Ellismoving to right back in the injury absence of fellow senior Makenzie Brito ... Mary Reilly has 28 career goals, with six against the Toros in three appearances, and all six of those in two Carson visits, having hit for a career-best four in UCSD's last trip there on Oct. 2, 2015, a 4-2 victory … It was Reilly's fifth multiple-goal game..
