No. 3 Longwood Falls To No. 6 High Point 3-1

November 2, 2013

FARMVILLE, Va. --  Jenny Marshall scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner at 63:04, to lead visiting High Point University to a 3-1 victory at Longwood University on Saturday night in a quarterfinal of the 2013 Big South Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Musco Lighting at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Sarah Sermonet added a first-half goal for the No. 6 Panthers (9-9-1), while keeper Jesse May had four saves against the No. 3 Lancers (9-9-2), who received a first-half goal from senior standout Kelsey Pardue/Richmond.  Longwood has completed its campaign, while High Point advances to a semifinal match against either No. 2 Liberty or No. 7 Presbyterian next Friday, November 8 in Conway, South Carolina.

“The first 30 minutes unfolded in a very positive way for us,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “We were able to pressure them and dictate a lot of the play in their half.  We didn’t deal with it very well.  We still had some good chances but weren’t able to finish them and High Point manufactured the goals they needed.

“We are disappointed because this is a special group, especially our seniors, and this particular journey is over for us.  It’s been a memorable ride this year.”

Longwood jumped ahead early against High Point as Pardue scored her eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick at 5:31 after a foul was called on the Panthers inside the box.  It appeared the Lancers would take a 1-0 advantage into the intermission, however, a hand ball was whistled against the hosts inside the box with just 22-seconds on the clock.  Taylor Parker’s PK attempt hit the crossbar, but Sermonet was there to collect the rebound and score the 45th minute goal for the visitors, and it was 1-1 at the break.

High Point almost scored in the first minute of the second half, but a shot by Parker hit the post.  The teams traded some off-target attempts before Longwood junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake had a header attempt in the 61st minute that was saved by May.  Marshall followed shortly thereafter with her own header attempt in the 64th minute that was good, assisted by Brooke Lisson on a set piece.  Phillips had another opportunity in the 80th minute that was stopped by May, before Marshall secured the outcome in the 88th minute with an unassisted blast from at least 35 yards that found the right upper 90.

Longwood had a slight 14-11 advantage in shots for the match, though High Point led 6-5 in attempts on goal, while it was 3-1 on corner kicks for the Lancers.  Phillips had five shots, two on goal, while Pardue and freshman Christina Corbin/Glen Allen each had two attempts, one on goal.  Graduate student and goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville played the entire contest in front of the net with three saves.

Parker had five shots, two on goal for High Point, and Marshall had three attempts, two on goal, while May played the duration in front of the net with the four saves for the Panthers, who avenged a 4-2 loss to Longwood on October 9.  Longwood and High Point were meeting for the 11th time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Panthers lead the series, 7-2-2.

The season finale ended the outstanding careers of Kelsey Pardue, Shelby Hall, Chelsea Walter/South Riding and Dana Wallace/Charlottesville.  Pardue completed her career with 24 goals and 22 assists for 70 points, and ranks in a tie for first in career assists, second in game-winning goals (12) and shots (206), third in points and games started (78), and tied for fourth in goals.
