Cambridge, Mass. – Senior Kristen Mewis tallied her first career hat trick to lead No. 5 Boston College to an 8-1 victory over Harvard in a non-conference match on Saturday night at Soldiers Field in Cambridge.

Boston College improved to 7-0-2 and 1-0-0 in the ACC. Harvard drops to 3-2-1. BC is now 6-0-1 against Harvard since the 2005 season. Tonight’s victory is the largest margin of victory between BC and Harvard. The last time BC scored eight goals was against Holy Cross on Sept. 17, 2006.

“I thought we had a lot of players that moved the ball really well for us,’’ said BC head coach Alison Foley. “Two players put in exceptional games for us. Casey Morrison was an incredible leader in the back and truly was a treat for people to watch her play. Kristie scored a hat trick and broke the all-time scoring record. Tonight she showed why she is the best player to date to wear a BC uniform.’’

The hat trick by Mewis is the first recorded in two seasons. The last BC player to record a three goal games was Victoria DiMartino vs. Brown in the 2010 season.

The six points scored in the game gives Mewis 96 career points, the new program record. She passed Sarah Rahko ’03 who has held the No. 1 spot in career points scored since the 2002 season. Mewis also extended her point scoring streak to nine games. She now has the top two scoring steaks recorded in the Eagles history. As a sophomore, Mewis tallied an assist or goal in 11 straight games. She has also scored eight goals in the last five games.

Mewis scored her first goal just four minutes into the game. Harvard tied the game at 1-1 in the 7^th minute of play and it looked like another tug-of-war between the two teams.

It never happened as Mewis scored her second goal in the 14^th minute for a 2-1 lead. Junior Gibby Wagner scored on a penalty kick in the 30^th minute followed by a goal by freshman McKenzie Meehan. Freshman Jana Jeffrey finished the scoring before the half as she knocked in a loose ball in the box and BC led 5-1 at the half.

Just two minutes into the second half, Mewis recorded her third goal of the game. Two minutes later senior Victoria DiMartino got on the board as she converted a penalty kick in the 50^th minute of play. BC’s final goal came off the foot of Meehan, her second of the night.

The Eagles held a 25-15 edge in shots on goal. Each team had only one corner kick in the game. BC goalkeeper Alex Gaul played 57 minutes and had two saves, while junior Jessica Mickelson recorded four saves in the game. Harvard used three goalkeepers in the match. Bethany Kanten had nine saves, while Cheta Emba had five saves.

BC will have a couple days off and then prepare for a two-game ACC road trip. The Eagles will play at No. 14 Wake Forest on Thursday, Sept. 20, followed by a match at No. 9 Virginia Tech on Sunday, Sept. 23.
