SEATTLE – No. 6 Washington (5-0-1) scored early and often Friday evening as the FGCU men’s soccer team opened its West Coast trip with a 5-0 setback to the Huskies.
For the fifth straight game to start the season, the Eagles surrendered a goal in the first 15 minutes and were playing catch-up the rest of the contest. Washington went on to add goals at the 41:35 and 42:19 marks to take a 3-0 lead into the halftime break. UW then added a strike in the 48th minute and another tally in the 74th minute to conclude its scoring for the evening.
The Green and Blue was out-shot, 20-8 – including an 11-3 disparity on net – as keeper Nathan Ingham (Ontario, Canada/Keswick HS) made six saves. Isaiah Madrid (Albuquerque, N.M./El Dorado HS/Westminster) attempted three of the eight FGCU shots, including two of the trio that were on frame, forcing UW goalie Ryan Herman into three stops.
The multiple-goal loss is the first for FGCU in 14 games, dating back to a 3-1 setback to Lipscomb on Oct. 6, 2012. The 5-0 margin of defeat is tied for the worst in program history, matched only by a 5-0 loss to Illinois-Chicago in the Eagles’ first year as Division-I member in 2007. Friday’s contest also marked only the second time FGCU has allowed five goals in a game in program history.
FGCU was making its second national TV appearance of the year as the match aired live on the Pac-12 Networks online, and will re-air on the Pac-12 Network Saturday morning at 9 (Eastern). The Eagles commenced their season with a 2-2 tie at USF as part of the NSCAATV.com National Game of the Week, and will make another national appearance next Sunday when they make the journey to the opposite side of the country to face Princeton on ESPNU.
The Eagles (0-4-1) last traveled to the West Coast in 2011 to take part in the Nike Portland Invitational where it battled host Portland and then Washington. The program has faced a Pac-12 team twice in its history, and both have been against Washington; the first ended in a 1-1 tie after UW tallied an 83rd-minute strike.
FGCU returns to action as it completes its West Coast trip by going up against Seattle University on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Eastern (2:30 local).
