August 30, 2011

Raleigh, N.C. - NC State scored two goals in each half as the Wolfpack defeated Old Dominion University women's soccer 4-1 Friday night in Raleigh.

NC State got on the board in the third minute on a goal by Stephanie Bronson. Ariela Schreibeis fired a shot from 25 yards out that was stopped by ODU keeper Brianna Alvarado, but the deflection bounced right to Bronson who put it in the back of the net.

In the 31st minute, Tanya Cain was taken down in the box and the Wolfpack were awarded a penalty kick that Alex Berger converted to give NC State a 2-0 lead.

ODU got on the board a little over a minute into the second half when Jocelyn Weidner sent a pass from the right into the box across to Lisa Bernardini who beat the goalkeeper to the left from five yards out. The goal is the first of Bernardini's career.

The Wolfpack increased their lead back to two when Kristina Argiroff sent in a header from five yards out off a cross pass from Julia Sandridge.

Less than a minute later Cain fired a shot from the left side just over the outstretched arm of Alvarado to give NC State a 4-1 lead.

ODU had a solid chance in the 79th minute when Amber Cook's shot from 35 yards out went off the cross bar.

NC State outshot ODU 15-13 and held a slim 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Bernardini and Kelly Evans had three shots apiece for ODU, while Cain led NC State with four.

Alvarado made six saves in goal for the Lady Monarchs while Kern made five for the Wolfpack.

The start of the game was delayed an hour and a half due to inclement weather in the area.

The Lady Monarchs continue their road swing as they travel to Richmond on Thursday, August 1 for a 7:30 p.m. start against the Spiders.
