ODU Ties Delaware 0-0
ODU SOCCER MONARCHS AND DELAWARE BATTLE TO 0-0 TIE
NEWARK, DE-- The nationally ranked ODU Soccer Monarchs (7-1-2/1-1-2) battled Delaware to a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes and two overtimes in a rematch of last year’s CAA Championship match. This is the second straight extra time match for the Monarchs who ranked ninth by College Soccer News, 11th by the NSCAA/Coaches, 12 by Soccer America and 14 by Soccer Times.
ODU senior goalkeeper Victor Francoz came up with nine saves on the day as Delaware edged the Monarchs in shots on goal, 9-6. Francoz now has five shutouts on the season.
ODU threatened late in regulation when leading scorer Tim Hopkinson’s shot with 22 minutes left in the match was saved by Delaware’s goalkeeper Jay Lupas. Jayson Gaylord also had a shot in the final minute that went high.
In the first overtime period ODU’s Francoz dove to stop Delaware’s Prince Nartey’s shot, then 25 seconds later Hopkinson almost put one in for the Monarchs, but was saved by Lupas. Francoz then on a free kick just missed wide on a shot attempt with two seconds left in the period.
In the final extra period Ivan Miltar’s shot was stopped and in the final minute of play Harmon’s shot
was stopped by Lupas. ODU’s Francoz also made two solid saves in the period, including a shot with
1:54 left in the match by Roberto Gimenez. Francoz dove right to keep the shot out.
ODU returns to action next Saturday at UNC Wilmington
