Pilot women rout USF
October 26, 2009
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore striker Danielle Foxhoven scored four goals and added an assist as the No. 2 Portland Pilots defeated the San Francisco Dons 8-0 in West Coast Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Foxhoven became the first player in University of Portland history with two four-goal games in the same season. She also scored four goals against Gonzaga in a 7-0 win earlier this year. Sophomore Halley Kreminski also recorded a second half hat trick to the pleasure of 4,059 fans that withstood the cold and rain. Portland (16-1-0, 5-0 WCC) held the Dons to one shot attempt as the Pilots have now outscored league opposition 30-1 this year.
Foxhoven has now recorded three hat tricks this season, a feat that has only been accomplished six times in school history. Only Tiffeny Milbrett has logged four hat tricks in a season (1992, 1994). With 21 goals already this year, Foxhoven is one shy of cracking UP’s single-season goals scored top 10 list. The list currently only has three names: Christine Sinclair, Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan.
Junior All-American Sophie Schmidt put Portland up early on Sunday with a goal in the 14th minute. Michelle Enyeart took a short corner from Foxhoven and glided unmarked into the penalty area. She laid a pass off to Jessica Tsao whose initial shot was blocked right to Schmidt. She side-volleyed her attempt inside the right post for her 10th goal of the season.
Foxhoven would then tally three more goals before intermission, marking the second time this year she had a hat trick by the half. Her first goal came in the 19th minute when Schmidt intercepted a poor goal kick and sent a thru ball to Foxhoven. She tapped the ball around oncoming USF goalkeeper Kelly Phole and clinically finished to the left post past two retreating defenders. Foxhoven then converted her fourth penalty kick of the year in the 33rd minute after being knocked down in the box. She capped the first half scoring in the 36th minute by tapping in a short cross from Kendra Chandhoke just 20 seconds after seeing one of her shots go off the right post.
Foxhoven tallied her fourth goal in the 51st minute with Tsao picking up her second assist of the day. Tsao now has eight assists this year from her right back defensive position.
Sophomore Halley Kreminski scored the final three goals for the Pilots. The first came on a header in the 64th minute with Foxhoven providing the assist on a free kick from the left corner. The second was also a header assisted by freshman Taylor Brooke in the 78th minute. Two minutes later, sophomore Charney Burk set up Kreminski’s eighth goal of the 2009 season.
Phole and USF reserve goalkeeper Noelle Salter combined to record five saves on the day for the Dons (6-5-5, 1-4), who were outshot 30-1. Portland also had two shots go off the post, one by Foxhoven in the first half, the other by Chandhoke in the second half.
Portland will next travel to No. 16 Santa Clara on Sunday, Nov. 1 for a 2 p.m. kickoff in a nationally televised contest on Fox Soccer Channel. The Pilots will conclude the regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 6 against San Diego live on ESPNU at 8 p.m.
