Pottle Carries Warhawks to Win over Loras

September 30, 2015

Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) scored twice to carry the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win over Loras College Wednesday night in Dubuque, Iowa. The Warhawks, ranked 20th in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, improve to 8-2 with an important win over their regional foe, Loras, who is now 6-3-1.

The first eleven minutes of the match belonged to Loras. The Duhawks earned two corners and fired two shots before the Warhawks generated any offensive pressure. One of their shots was a header on goal that Warhawk goalkeeper Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) saved.

Katie Truesdale put the Duhawks on the board in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead, but it was short lived as Pottle answered less than a minute later. Pottle gathered a ball from Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) to score her fifth goal of the season and tie the game. With the assist, her fourth of the year, Woodson is now tied for the UW-Whitewater record for career assists. Her next assist will put her alone at the top of the list with 29 assists, one ahead of Becky Cera who played for the Warhawks from 2006-09.

Loras responded with some serious pressure on the Warhawk defense and Doody. Doody made three more saves before the first half was over but did relinquish one more goal to Truesdale in the 29th minute.

The Duhawks carried their 2-1 lead into halftime.

To say the second half was intense might be an understatement. There were 19 fouls and five yellow cards in the second half alone.

Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) tied the game in the 79th minute with an unassisted goal and the Warhawk defense stiffened and limited the Duhawks to zero shots until the final four minutes of regulation.

With the last few minutes ticking away both teams had great chances to take the lead, but both goalkeepers made critical saves to force overtime.

The first overtime was foul laden as well and each team had one quality opportunity to score, but it was the goalkeepers again doing their job to force a second overtime.

Finally, in the 107th minute, Loras was whistled for a foul that resulted in a penalty kick for the Warhawks. Pottle stepped up and struck it past the keeper for the win.

Doody made a season-high seven saves in the match.

The Warhawks will travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday for their next match. UW-Whitewater is currently 1-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and holds a 30-game WIAC regular season win streak. The Falcons are 4-5-1, 0-2 in the league, and have not beat the Warhawks in their last seven tries.
