Raiders Best Titans 1-0 in Downpour

October 20, 2011

DETROIT -- The Titans (12-5-1, 5-2 Horizon League) hosted the Wright State Raiders (8-6-2, 3-2-1 Horizon League) Wednesday afternoon at Titan Field. The weather was a constant factor throughout the game as Wright State escaped with a 1-0 victory. Detroit remains the No. 9 ranked team in the Great Lakes Region in this week's latest poll.

In a contest that featured wind, rain, cold and overall unpleasant soccer weather, it was a goal in the 19th minute from I'esha King of Wright State that made the difference. King, who last week was named the Horizon League Women's Soccer Player of the Week, scored her third goal of the season as her shot from about 16 yards out, after taking a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box, found the back of the net.

“In the second half, I thought we played great and left everything on the field. We have upperclassmen on this team who are hungry to win and that leadership showed in the second half. We had a great chance to tie it at the end but games like this happen where you play well and don't come out with the result you want,” said head coach Mike Lupenec.

The first half saw Wright State with the upper hand, and the wind, on their side. The Raiders finished with six shots, four on goal, in the opening half including their goal at 18:53 as they held the majority of the possession.

“At the beginning of the game and for the first half, I don't think we played well. You have to give Wright State credit though because they won the 50/50 battles and capitalized on our defensive mistake,” added Lupenec.

The Titans came out in the second half looking for the equalizer having the wind at their backs. Detroit had seven corner kicks, with four coming in the final five minutes of the contest, and also totaled a 4-1 shooting advantage in the final frame.

The game was nearly tied up in the 89th minute as a corner kick from Sarah Dzuris found Alexandra Suschak who had two point blank opportunities to score. Both of her shots found the goalkeeper who made both saves to keep the game knotted up.

The last regular season home game brought the first home loss of the year for the Titans after previously holding a perfect 6-0 mark. The Wright State goal was the first Detroit has allowed in five games as the last four outings have all been shutout victories. Goaltender Nora Abolins made three saves today but saw her streak without allowing a goal come to an end after 403:59.

The Titans remain in second place in the conference standings, still three points ahead of Valparaiso after a 1-0 home win for the Crusaders over Butler Wednesday. Detroit will close out the regular season schedule Sunday at Cleveland State needing a win to clinch the second seed in the Horizon League Tournament. That game will be shown live on the Horizon League Network at 1:00 p.m.
