Rambelles top No. 24 A&M-Commerce

October 7, 2013

COMMERCE – Selena Alvarez scored off a corner-kick assist from Brittany Martinez in the waning moments of the first half and the Angelo State soccer team played shutdown defense to earn a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday at Lion Soccer Field.

The Rambelles (6-2-1, 2-0 LSC) are on a five-game winning streak and have five shutouts this season. The five-game winning streak is the best in program history breaking through the four-win mark teams in 1998, 2006, 2007 and 2010 accomplished.

"We are playing with a lot of heart right now," Martinez said. "We really want to prove that we are a good team and are doing that right now."

"We knew we were going to have to battle for balls in the air and stay focused," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "It was a very passionate game and our defenders did a great job winning 50-50 balls. We are really proud of the defense along with our midfield."

A&M-Commerce falls to 5-2-1 overall and to 1-1-1 in LSC play with the loss.

Alvarez's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season and came at the 43:26 mark of the first half. ASU had taken only four shots prior to the goal and would finish the game with only nine shots. The one goal from Alvarez would prove to be all that was needed though.

"They were stepping in early on the front post and coach told me to go there and be ready," Alvarez said. "Brittany played a perfect cross and I was just able to get my head on it. Sometimes getting only one goal isn't great, but it is when you get a shutout. Hats off to our defense."

Dani Edwards earned her fourth shutout of the season and the 12th of her career in goal for the Rambelles. Sierra Anderson led ASU with three shots with Katie Squires, Jordan Benfield, Kathleen Keoughan and Haley Mendel also adding shots.

The Rambelles, who are 4-0-1 on the road this season, will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Texas Woman's in Denton.

"I think our confidence is building," McCorkle said. "I thought we were a little passive at the start of the game, but they really picked it up and started playing great. Commerce played hard in the second half but we were able to hold them off for the win."
