Red Foxes Top Saint Peter's, 2-0
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team converted on a pair of penalty kicks in the second half to defeat Saint Peter's, 2-0, and move to 3-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this season. Freshmen Simon Jorgensen and Cameron Harr came through in the clutch as the Red Foxes improved to 5-5 on the season.
"We focused on pushing the tempo and moving the ball more in the second half since we weren't getting too many chances," head coach Matt Viggiano said.
Harr led Marist with four shots while sophomore Mark Rajovic made six saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Rajovic's 10 career shutouts put him in a tie with Joe Pilla for second place in the program's all-time history. With his next shutout, Rajovic will move into a tie for first place with Mike Valenti.
In the 18th minute of today's contest, a shot from Harr clanged off the post for the best scoring chance for either team in the first half. Rajovic made four saves to keep Saint Peter's off the scoreboard.
At the top of the 87th minute, sophomore Brandon Curtis was tripped up on the left side of the box to give Marist the first of the two penalty kick opportunities. Jorgensen scored his second goal in as many contests off the Peacocks' foul, while Harr netted his team-best seventh score with 11 seconds left.
The Red Foxes had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. The Peacocks finished with 13 shots in their first conference loss, including four from sophomore Ezequiel Cei.
Marist will play at Quinnipiac in a 3 p.m. contest Oct. 7 before hosting Fairfield at 7 p.m. Oct. 10.
