MADISON, Wis. – Illinois State equalized twice in the second half at No. 15 Wisconsin, but conceded a game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lose 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex.  After registering just 12 shots their past two games combined, the Redbirds fired a season-high 18 in defeat.

“The result isn’t what we were looking for, but I thought we deserved better,” head coach Drew Roff said.  “We played very well and I think we took control of things in the second half and the majority of the overtime periods.  I’m really proud of the team.  If we play this well throughout the season, we will be in very good shape.”

The game-winner came from the foot of Wisconsin’s (5-1-0) Cara Walls, her second of the game, in the 104th minute.  The Badgers played a ball in to the box from the left side that was headed into the air by Joana Bielefeld.  Walls was there to collect the ball before any Redbird (3-2-2) could clear it, slotting it past Aryn Newsom to win the game.

With the Redbirds down 2-1, Rachel Tejada sent the match into overtime with her ninth goal of the season in the 84th minute.  Aimee Wronski won the ball with a challenge in the midfield and advanced it down the right side.  She played a ball in to Tejada, who shot one over the outstretched arms of Lauren Gunderson into the upper-left corner of the net.  The tally moves her into sole possession of second place on the program’s all-time goals list with 30.

Walls opened the scoring in the 27th minute with her second goal of the season.  After ISU tied the game in the 53^rd minute at 1-1 on a long-range shot from Anna Stinson that also beat Gunderson in the upper-left corner for her first goal of the season, the Badgers responded seven minutes later.  Sarah Carlson was struck with a shot in the box and whistled for a hand ball.  Wisconsin’s Paige Adams converted the penalty kick to put the Badgers back on top.

The defeat was the first of the sudden-death variety for the Redbirds since 2010 against Creighton.  ISU last conceded a game-winner in the second overtime period in 2005. 

With starter Heather Sterling out injured, Mia Patrevito played 74 solid minutes along the back line, nearly eclipsing her total of 82 minutes through the first six matches.  Newsom made six saves in defeat.  Wronski led all players with five shots, while Tejada registered four.

The Redbirds travel to Ohio next weekend for a pair of matches with Bowling Green and Toledo.  ISU takes on the Falcons, Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:00 p.m.  They will then travel to Toledo for a match Sunday at noon.
