Reid Scores Game-Winner; Warhawks Advance

November 13, 2015

Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) scored the game-winning goal in the third minute of a 1-0 overtime win over Carroll University Friday to help the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Warhawks, 18-4, advance to the second round for the fourth time in the last five seasons and will face the winner of the nightcap between Gustavus Adolphus and Wheaton (IL).

The first half started quickly with both teams recording double-digit shots in the first 45 minutes.

Carroll had two opportunities in the seventh minute of play but one shot hit the post and the other was saved by Warhawk goalkeeper Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central).

In the 19th minute of play, Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) gave the Pioneers a scare with a shot on goal, but Sabrina Sieger was there to make the save.

Each team had an opportunity in the final five minutes of the half, but both goalkeepers kept it out of the net and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

After a quick shot on goal by Carroll in the third minute of the second half, the Warhawk defense didn't allow another shot until the 74th minute.

On the other end of the field the Warhawks continued to pepper the Carroll goal with shots. UW-W outshot the visiting team 12-3 in the second half.

One of the best opportunities came in the final six minutes of regulation. Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) had a chance to give UW-W a 1-0 lead, but Sieger positioned herself to make the save.

The game was over just 2:18 into overtime when Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) sent a cross into the box that found the head of Reid. Reid popped a ball up in the air that crept just over the keeper's head to win the game. The goal was Reid's tenth game-winner this season, which leads the country.

The Warhawks outshot Carroll 26-14 in the match and earned 10 corner kicks to their one.

With the win, the Warhawks tied the school record for wins in a season, a record they set last season.

UW-W will return to the pitch on Saturday at 5 pm for their second round match. The winner advances to the Sweet 16 at a site to be determined.
