Rhode Island Rains on Saints’ Parade

September 13, 2013

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Donika Murray’s golden goal in the 93rd minute gave Rhode Island a 2-1 overtime victory over Siena Women’s Soccer Friday at Siena Turf Field. The loss was just the Saints’ second in their past 26 non-conference home matches dating back to 2007.

Both teams toughed out a torrential downpour that lasted throughout the match and initially forced the contest off the Saints’ grass field and onto the turf. The rain soaked pitch led to a number of odd skips and bounces and additional chances for both sides.

Murray took advantage of one such bounce and made a nifty move around a Siena (3-3) defender to win it for Rhode Island (4-3).

Both regulation goals came late in the first half, with the Rams’ Nicole Brennan opening the scoring in the 28th minute.

The Saints responded in the 42nd minute when senior captains Brittany Pfaff and Taylor D’Alfonso hooked up to knot the score at one aside. D’Alfonso spun and fired home her second goal of the season, giving the Saints’ dynamic striker duo a combined 21 points through the first six matches of the season.

2011 Section II Class AA Player of the Year Liz Rogan (Wilton, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) made four saves in her first collegiate start at Siena. Reilly Lindsey stopped three shots to earn the win in goal for Rhode Island.

The Saints return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. for their penultimate non-conference match of the season at Central Connecticut.
