(Kansas City, Mo.) - Despite being out-shot, 18-4, the UMKC women's soccer team (5-7-3, 2-2 SL) came away with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Oakland Golden Grizzlies (6-4-3, 3-1 SL) on Friday.

Defensively and with the help of her teammates, keeper Nina Tzianos (3-5-3) recorded her third shutout of the season as she tallied a career high 12 saves to tie senior Jami Finnell (1-2) for the third most in a single match in team history.

Throughout the first period, the Golden Grizzlies came away with nine shots compared to the Kangaroos three. Yet, Kansas City took a 1-0 lead during the 41st minute when defender Sarah Todd (1) placed a free kick deep in Oakland's goalie box as midfielder Sophie Rackham (1) was there to knock it in.

As for Tzianos, she denied Oakland six times during the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Golden Grizzlies remained on the attack tallying nine shots, while the Kangaroo defense remained steady with Tzianos picking up six saves.

During the 82nd minute off a free kick about 15 yards away from Oakland's box, Todd (1) fired a shot out of the reach of keeper Shannon Coley (5-3-2) to put the Kangaroos up, 2-0.

About two minutes later, Oakland had a chance to cut the deficit in half when forward Sarah Reynolds was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in Kansas City's box. However, Reynolds failed to capitalize as her shot went wide to the right.

Throughout the rest of the match, Kansas City kept the Golden Grizzlies in check to hold on for the victory.

Coming up, the Kangaroos will look to continue to climb the league standings when they take on the Fort Wayne Mastodons (7-6, 3-1 SL) on Sunday at 4 p.m. in their final home match of the season.
