October 8, 2010
SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The Samford University soccer team extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches Thursday with a 1-0 road victory against the Wofford Terriers in a crucial Southern Conference showdown held at Snyder Field. The Bulldogs’ true freshman Trine Taule scored the game-winning goal during the 21st minute of action.

With the victory, Samford (7-5-1, 3-2 SoCon) concluded its arduous three-match road swing with an unblemished 3-0 record. Prior to Thursday’s triumph, the Bulldogs tallied consecutive wins against College of Charleston 2-0 and The Citadel 7-0.

Samford now holds a 3-3 record on the road this season and will begin a key three-match homestand Sunday against Furman at 2 p.m. (CDT).

Wofford (5-4-3, 0-2-3 SoCon) had its three-match undefeated streak snapped Thursday. Prior to their 1-0 loss to Samford, the Terriers rattled off consecutive draws with SoCon foes Davidson 2-2, Western Carolina 0-0 and Appalachian State 0-0.

Samford remained undefeated all-time against Wofford and improved its series record to 2-0-3. Despite facing each other five times on the pitch, the teams have only scored a total of four goals. The Bulldogs have earned wins of 3-0 and 1-0, while the remaining three outings all ended in identical 0-0 ties.

In Thursday’s win, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Taule scored her third goal in two matches during the 21st minute of play. On the score, which was her team-leading fourth of the season, Taule headed in a centering pass from senior Hilary Samuels. The goal was scored at exactly 20:13 into the match.

Samuels, Samford’s midfielder from Carrollton, Texas, registered her fourth assist of the season on the play. She is currently tied with junior forward Lauren Cook for the team’s 2010 lead in assists.

At halftime at Snyder Field, the Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead. In the first 45 minutes of play, Samford outshot Wofford 8-0, with Samuels leading the way with two attempts.

The Bulldogs finished Thursday’s contest with 16 shot attempts, 11 of which were on goal. Wofford concluded the matchup with one shot attempt, an on-goal blast from Nikki Siebert.

Samford’s All-SoCon goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead tallied her seventh shutout of the 2010 campaign, including her third in a row. Only a junior, Whitehead has already accumulated 21 career shutouts, which is only one shy of setting Samford’s all-time record.

Former Bulldog-great, Crystal Royall currently holds the record with 21.5 career shutouts.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to welcome the Furman Paladins to Bulldog Field for another key SoCon matchup. The contest will begin a critical three-match homestand for Samford.
