#Seawolves, Knights battle to 0-0 draw

September 8, 2014

Stonny Brook, N.Y. - The #Seawolves and Knights duked it out for 110 minutes but neither team could find the back of the net in a scoreless draw. Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but in the end, the two defenses prevailed to post clean sheets.

Anatol's Reaction

"I thought this was a game we thought we were on top of," Anatol said. "We were pretty good defensively and the guys were organized and were competing. I felt like we were starting to wear them down and we were getting a hold of the game in the second half but overall we just need to do a little bit more."

Highlights

  • In a game that waited 110 minutes for a goal, the fans were almost treated to one right off the bat. Senior Keith McKenna hit a cracking left-footed volley in the game's first minute but it was straight at the keeper.
  • Freshman Akeem Morris (Elmont, N.Y.) nearly got his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute but his shot was pulled inches wide of the far post.
  • Junior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) started to heat up in the second half, almost scoring on two separate occassions. The first opportunity presented itself thanks to a beautiful delivery from junior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) but Giordano's glancing header went wide. Moments later he picked up a second ball headed down from McKenna and sent a dipping shot on net that was denied by the FDU keeper.
  • Fritz and redshirt freshman Dario Vanegas (Miami, Fla.) teamed up to force a crucial double save in the game's waning moments. Fritz unleashed a shot from a steep angle that gave up a juicy rebound but Vanegas's follow-up effort didn't have enough power to beat the keeper.
  • Despite creating the better chances throughout the first 90 minutes, Stony Brook almost lost the game in the final minute. FDU had three attempts at goal from inside the 18 yard box but the first two were blocked and the third was denied by redshirt freshman Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas).

Notes

  • McMahon made six saves for his second career shutout and second shutout in as many games. He has stopped 13 shots over that span.
  • With the shutout the #Seawolves have now gone over 213 minutes without conceeding a goal.
  • Fairleigh Dickinson outshot Stony Brook 19-15 and shots on goal were even at six.
  • Shots were even at 14 apiece in regulation but FDU had a 5-1 advantage in the overtime sessions, altough none were threatening.
  • The Seawolves held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
