Second half lifts Fairfield over Seawolves

Fairfield, Conn. - The Fairfield Stags (6-1-1) scored two second half goals to overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit and hand the #Seawolves a 3-2 loss. The difference in the game came down to two second half penalty kicks. The Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute but the shot was saved. Fairfield was presented with a penalty opportunity in the 85th minute and converted the chance to seal the win.

"I am proud of the way our team handled ourselves for 90 minutes today," said Ryan. "We are getting closer to finding our identity as a team, which is to fight and claw. Today we battled a very good, scrappy Fairfield team and unfortunately came up on the short end of the straw."

Goal Recaps

  • Fairfield took the lead in the 8th minute on a goal from Megan O'Brien.
  • Redshirt junior Regan Bosnyak (West Hartford, Conn.) drew the Seawolves even when she headed home a corner kick for her first goal of the year. Junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) delivered the service to pick up the assist. 
  • Freshman Gabi Rosenfeld (Holland, Pa.) gave Stony Brook the lead in the 41st minute. The unassisted goal was the first of her career.
  • Fairfield tied the game in the 58th minute on a goal from Emily Wieczorek. Her shot found the back of the net after it took a deflection.
  • Anna Borea converted the 85th minute penalty kick to give the Stags the win. 

Highlights

  • The Stony Brook penalty kick, which was saved, was their first opportunity of the year. If converted, it would have given the #Seawolves a 3-2 lead.
  • Fairfield almost took the lead in the 77th minute but Brenna Brown's shot hit the post. 
  • Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) had a chance to tie the game with 30 seconds left but her shot went wide.


Notes

  • Devereaux's assist was her team-leading second of the season and the 11th of her career.
  • Redshirt senior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) made eight saves in the match, one shy of her season-high.
  • Fairfield outshot the Seawolves 22-16 and 11-7 in shots on goal.
  • Bosnyak attempted a game-high seven shots.
