Senior Night ends in tie for women’s soccer

October 18, 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte controlled much of the flow of play Saturday night but a late goal by Old Dominion pushed the contest into overtime, where it would end tied 2-2 in Conference USA women’s soccer action. The 49ers honored this year’s senior class of five players prior to the start of the match for the annual Senior Night festivities.

On a night on which she was honored, senior Amanda Jones was the first to strike for either side with her third goal of the campaign at 17:24. She juggled the ball to herself before inching it past a Lady Monarch defender. With just the goalkeeper, Erin Kinz, between her and the back of the net, Jones placed a hard shot just inside the left post to put Charlotte (7-5-2, 4-2-1 C-USA) up 1-0.

Jones’ goal would stand up as the only tally in the first half for either side, despite the Niners taking a 10-to-6 shot advantage into the intermission.

Old Dominion (4-7-4, 3-2-2 C-USA) made more of a push during the early stages of the second period and the visitors found the equalizer after a flurry of chances in front of the 49ers net. Three-straight shots were placed towards the cage, starting with a free kick from the left flank. A second shot ricocheted off the crossbar, only to find the feet of Madison Hogan for a tap-in at the goal line at the 58:36 mark. Natalie Johnson bounced the initial shot off the goal frame, setting up the tying score.

As both teams had looks in an effort to pull ahead, it would be nearly another 25 minutes before the scoring column changed. Senior Jessica Ryan passed ahead to freshman Martha Thomas, who raced towards the Lady Monarch cage. With Kinz charging hard, Thomas flicked the ball over her adversary’s head at 83:24, putting the 49ers on top, 2-1.

Charlotte was forced to play defense as Old Dominion started to make another push forward. Finally, at 89:32, Devyn Hannis located Hogan, who blasted a shot from the top right of the 18-yard box across the goal mouth and into the left-side netting, past a diving effort from redshirt junior goalkeeper Annika McHenry.

Neither team could put the ball between the pipes in the two extra periods, though the 49ers had chances with freshman Virginia Lingo placing a hard attempt from 25 yards out just over the crossbar.

Thomas led the Niners with six shots, while Jones and Lingo each tallied five for Charlotte, who finished with 26. It marked the third-straight contest in which the 49ers had 20 or more shots.

Lady Monarch Jessie Klamut paced all players with eight attempts, while Hogan added five as part of a collective 20-shot performance by the visitors.

McHenry finished with five saves, while Kinz had six stops on the evening as both goalkeepers played the full 110 minutes.

Charlotte, who moves into a temporary first-place tie in the Conference USA standings with the draw, will hit the road for its next two games. The 49ers travel to the Lone Star State to face North Texas in Denton, Texas, at 8 p.m. ET Friday, before moving on to Houston to square off against Rice at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
