Shannon Records 15th Career Shutout As CSUB And UC Davis Play To Tie

September 11, 2011

DAVIS, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield goalie Eric Shannon (Jr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) recorded his 15th career shutout as the Roadrunners (2-0-1) and UC Davis (2-1-2) played to a 0-0 double overtime tie Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Field. Shannon is now in sole possession of third place in CSUB history in career shutouts.

Shannon made five saves on the afternoon. His final save came off an Alex Henry header in the 99th minute. The Roadrunners took outshot UC Davis 23-11 and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. The match was a physical one as the teams combined for 36 fouls (20-UC Davis, 16-CSUB) and seven yellow cards.

Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS) reset the CSUB Division I record for most shots in a match with nine. The old record was six which was held by Towa Manda (at Longwood, Oct. 6, 2007) and Manny Garcia (at LIU, Sept. 6, 2007). In the 45th minute, Zardes hit the post and with 51 seconds remaining, a Zardes’ blast was saved by UCD goalie Omar Zeenni. Zeenni had seven saves for the Aggies.

The Roadrunners return to the Main Soccer Field for a two-game homestand next week. CSUB hosts Cal State Northridge Thursday night at 7 p.m. and Saint Mary’s Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
