Soellner's Late Goal Gives Navy 10th Straigh

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior forward Ashlynn Soellner (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) scored twice, including the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining, as Navy (10-1-0) extended the nation's longest winning streak by defeating Boise State (4-6-1), 2-1, Friday at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
 
Navy has won 10 straight games since falling to then No. 13 Maryland in its season opener on August 17. The Mids also became the first team in the country to reach the 10-win mark.
 
After each team scored in the first 18 minutes, the game remained tied at 1-1 until the 90th minute when Soellner broke through for the game-winner. Sophomore Julie Schumacher (Plantation, Fla.) played a ball to sophomore defender Jade Seabrook (St. Paris, Ohio), who sent a long serve down the right side. The ball bounced in front of and then over the Boise State goalkeeper and Soellner moved in to finish off the scoring chance with 89:33 showing on the clock.
 
"I always try to look for the long ball and I saw it come in and bounce over the goalkeeper," said Soellner. "I got to the ball and saw the far side netting was wide open. I had a tight angle but I just passed it to goal."
 
The goal was Soellner's second of the game and her team-leading eighth of the season. She leads Navy with four game-winning goals this season and has 11 for her career.
 
Soellner opened the game's scoring in the 15th minute when she connected on a shot from 18 yards out off an assist from sophomore forward Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.).
 
Soellner also scored two goals in Navy's win over North Florida on September 2.
 
"I'm proud of Ashlynn for being composed tonight and putting those goals away," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "She relaxed on her finish and did exactly what an attacking player is asked to do." 
 
Boise State tied the game three minutes after Soellner's first goal when KT Clayton scored off a set piece.
 
Boise State held a slim, 15-13, margin on shots in the game, but Navy had seven shots on goal to just five by the Broncos.
 
"I give a lot of credit to our team's intensity, fight and heart," Gabarra said. "That was a really good Boise State team. I thought they attacked well, they were talented, they were technical and they sprung forward in numbers. We did very well tonight to fight back and get the win."
 
Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner (Lititz, Pa.) made four saves to notch her ninth win of the season.
 
Navy now holds a 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series with Boise State.
 
This is the third time this season Navy has scored a game-winning goal in the 89th minute or later. Sophomore forward Lily Kraemer (Pitman, N.J.) scored in the 89th minute in Navy's 2-1 win at Jacksonville and Soellner scored with 89:28 on the clock in Navy's come-from-behind 3-2 win over George Mason.
 
Navy has now won at least 10 games in 17 out of the last 18 seasons. Although Navy was the first team in the nation to win 10 games, Iowa (10-1-0) joined the Mids in the 10-win club later in the evening on Friday.
 
The Mids will next play at Howard on Monday at 7:00 PM.
