Stony Brook beats Albany in overtime, 1-0

Stony Brook, N.Y. - In front of a crowd of over 1,000, including a group of #Seawolves soccer alumni, the Stony Brook men's soccer team sent everyone home happy when sophomore Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) struck a goal in the 98th minute to give the #Seawolves a 1-0 overtime victory over Albany, Friday night at LaValle Stadium.
 
The win moves Stony Brook over the .500 mark at 5-4-0, and gives the team three points in its America East opener. Albany falls to 1-7-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
 
Head Coach Ryan Anatol's Reaction
"I thought it was a very good performance. I thought we controlled the majority of the play. I thought we carried the play defensively, and we just felt that if we continued to create chances, we would get one. Unfortunately, it took us until overtime, but we're happy with the result."
 
Goal Recap
In the 98th minute, the #Seawolves had control of the ball. Sophomore Mario Mesen (Brujas, Costa Rica) played a ball to sophomore Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) just outside the box. Mesen beat his defender, and Fritz one-timed the pass back to Mesen on the outside. Mesen took a dribble in, then crossed the ball into the box. Giordano then beat his defender, stuck his foot out and connected with the ball, sending it top shelf past the goalkeeper.

  • Stony Brook outshot Albany, 11-8, but the Great Danes held the advantage on shots on goal, 3-2.
  • Giordano's goal was his first of the season. He now has four points (1-2-4) on the year.
  • Mesen picked up his third assist of the season.
  • Senior Carlos Villa (Caracas, Venezuela) earned his second clean sheet in as many games.
  • The shutout was Stony Brook's fourth of the year.
  • The #Seawolves have now won three matches by 1-0 scores this season.
  • Stony Brook has not allowed a goal in its last 203:38 minutes played.
 
News & Notes
  • Stony Brook improved to 16-21-2 all-time against Albany, and the team is now unbeaten against the Great Danes in their last eight meetings (6-0-2).
  • The #Seawolves are also unbeaten at home against Albany over the last seven matches (6-0-1).
  • The Seawolves are now 23-2-1 all-time under Anatol when scoring the match's first goal.
  • This was Stony Brook's first overtime match of the season. The Seawolves were in five overtime matches in 2012, and this was the 11th during Anatol's tenure (3-3-5).
  • Stony Brook has now won three consecutive conference openers.
