Terriers Defeat Navy; 2-1; For Win #1

September 5, 2013

Annapolis, Maryland---A pair of first half goals in a five minute span proved to be the difference as the St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team secured their first victory of the 2013 campaign, defeating the Navy Midshipmen 2-1 at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

The win, which evened the Terriers record to 1-1, was the 48th career victory for head coach Tom Giovatto, who is in his seventh season at the helm of the men's soccer program.  Navy now stands at 0-1-2 on the season.

"Navy is a very good team and we were outplayed tonight," said Giovatto. "Our guys did a tremendous job in finishing on our scoring chances. Andy (Cormack) had a very good game, played well on both sides of the ball and came up big for us on the free kick opportunity.  We were able to catch Navy's defense up too high.  Also, Gabriel (Bagot) and Kevin (Correa) worked a sensational 2-on-1. Gabby made a great pass and Kevin had a great finish. Looking on to Saturday, UMBC is a tough team.  They are averaging close to three goals a game and have two offensive threats in Pete Caringi (six goals) and Kadeem Dacres.  We are going to have to do a better job in keeping them off the score sheet."

After a foul was assessed to the Midshipmen just outside the box in the 20th minute, junior defender Andy Cormack was selected to take the free kick for the Terierrs.  The ball was placed approximately 25 yards out as his shot curled over the wall towards the upper left corner of the net to beat Navy goalkeeper Aaron Dupere to give St. Francis Brooklyn the early 1-0 advantage.

"The shot attempt felt good as it left my foot," commented Cormack after the game. "The ball curled over the wall and into the top left corner of the goal. I hit a few in warm-ups and in practice and was confident when the opportunity presented itself."

Five minutes later, the Terriers struck again.  2012 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Kevin Correa received a pass from senior forward Gabriel Bagot and converted on the 2-on-1 breakaway to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

"It felt good to record a goal in today's victory," stated Correa. "I followed Gabriel (Bagot) on a run where he went one-on-one with the defender.  I was able to position myself to give him a chance where he can either play the ball to me or take it himself.  He decided to lead the pass and I was fortunate to put a good first touch and beat the goalie."

The Midshipmen came out with more tenacity in the second half of play, outshooting the visitors by a 9-to-5 mark and finally tallied a goal in the 72nd minute.  Geoff Fries took the ball in the box and was taken down by a Terrier defender.  A foul was called and Navy was awarded a penalty kick.  Joseph Greenspan stepped up and was able to beat sophomore keeper Seth Erdman to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Navy continued to threaten late in the contest and was able to come close to tying the score but couldn't get off any solid shots.  With three minutes left in regulation, Guy Skord rocketed a shot on goal from 30 yards out, but the ball sailed high over the cross bar.

For the match, the Terriers were outshot 16-11 but St. Francis Brooklyn held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.  Junior goalkeeper Jack Binks started the first half for the Terriers and earned his first Terrier victory. The native of Darlington, England played the first 45 minutes of the match before giving way to Erdman (one save) at halftime.  Dupere made five saves for the Mids, playing the entire 90 minutes.

The Terriers will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 7th as they travel to Catonsville, Maryland to tangle with the #RV University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers at Retrievers Soccer Stadium.  UMBC secured a 3-1 victory over Northeast Conference member Central Connecticut tonight.
