Three Griffs Score in Win

September 13, 2013

Three different players found the back of the net for the Canisius College women’s soccer team (2-5-1) in its 3-0 victory over Albany (1-5).

The Griffs first got on the board in the third minute of play, when freshman midfielder Sabrina Fitzgerald finished a pass from junior forward Mallory Illsley from 18 yards out.

Illsley was then able to score one of her own in the 68th minute. Senior midfielder Katie Griffin found the forward just inside the left side of the box. Illsley sent a shot past Albany’s Alana Brennan in the upper right corner to give Canisius a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Brittany Krause was able to cap off the scoring exactly five minutes later. After senior forward Brianna Smith’s shot deflected off the post, Krause was able to collect the rebound and put past Brennan for the Griffs’ final goal. The goal was Krause’s first of the season.

“It was great to get three different goal scorers tonight,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “If we keep attacking it gets different people scoring and helping us out. It helps [Smith] out as well because then other teams have to key on four or five different players instead of just one scorer.”

Senior goalkeeper Megan Tock made five saves in the contest to maintain the shutout. It’s the second time she’s led the Griffs to a shutout this season.

The Griffs have one final contest remaining before they begin MAAC play. That game will come against Akron (2-2-2) on Sunday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is slated for noon.

GAME NOTES: The last time the Griffs had three different players score in a contest was Sept. 7, 2012. That game was also against Albany… The win evens the all time series between the programs at 2-2… The win evens the Griffs’ Illsley’s two goals in eight games this season double her career total from her previous 37 career games.
