COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior defender Katie Uyenishi got it done at both ends of the field against Florida International University.

Uyenishi scored the only goal Colorado College needed midway through the first half and helped the Tigers record their eighth shutout of the season during Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Panthers.

CC improved to 8-3-0 overall and maintained its position atop Conference USA’s West Division with a 3-0-0 record and nine points.

Junior midfielder Jessie Ayers doubled the home team's advantage 7:06 into the second half when she took a feed from sophomore midfielder Alexis Long and blasted a shot off the right post for her fifth tally of the year.

With four goals in the last five contests, giving her 16 for her career, Ayers now is tied with Stevie Kernan (2002-04, 2006) for 24th place on the program’s all-time list. She also is tied for 30th with 37 career points.

Sophomore midfielder Sarah Schweiss closed out the scoring in the 67th minute when she knocked home the rebound of a direct kick by senior midfielder Madison Whitehead. With a goal and an assist in the game, Schweiss reclaimed the team’s point lead with 12.

“We came out directing play and looking to finish things off early,” Schweiss said. “Our defense is a rock. The back three does a great job controlling the ball and getting it back up field.”

Colorado College, which has yet to give up a goal at home this season, needed just one save from sophomore Kate Scheele and two from senior Cody Kornack, who played the final 17:36 in goal.

Scheele, who extended her scoreless streak to 561.59, lowered her goals-against average to 0.55 and improved her saves percentage to .857.

“It was a hard game to play,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “Our goalkeeper and backline have been good all year.

“Lexi Long is also playing well for us in the midfield and Jessie Ayers and Katie (Uyenishi) are as well. We have a lot of players playing well for us. Hopefully we can keep that going and keep this streak alive.”

The Tigers have recorded six consecutive shutouts for just the second time in program history, joining the 1987 squad that did not surrender a goal in the first six games of the season.  

CC finished with a 21-5 advantage in total shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Senior Paula Zuluaga made eight saves for the Panthers, who slipped to 3-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

CC plays host to North Texas at noon MT Sunday.
