Tigers Play Lady 'Jacks to Scoreless Draw

September 8, 2014

The Tigers (3-2-1) held the upper hand in the run of play for much of the night, but were unable to break through the Stephen F. Austin (2-2-1) defense through two halves and two extra time periods as they are now 4-1-1 in six meetings all-time with the three-time defending Southland Conference Champions.

Defender Jordane Carvery nearly opened the scoring for the Tigers with a quarter of an hour gone in the first half when she fired a blistering header on frame from about eight yards on a corner kick taken by standout midfielder Natalia Gomez-Junco from the left corner flag. Glick positioned herself well in defending LSU’s first corner kick of the night as she made a diving save to her right to deny Carvery her first career goal.

Carvery was again denied by Glick on another headed effort on Gomez-Junco’s corner kick in the 25th minute as the Tigers turned up the pressure on their opponent midway through the first half.

Striker Fernanda Pina nearly scored the breakthrough just a minute later with a one-time strike from about 12 yards that whistled past the left post when she followed Megan Lee’s initial strike from the left side of the area that was parried away by a diving Glick inside the six-yard box in the 26th minute. The Lady ‘Jack goalkeeper certainly made her presence felt early while frustrating the Tiger attack.

Despite a dominant performance in the opening frame without a breakthrough, it wasn’t until the 70th minute that the second half really came alive for the Tigers when substitute Lexi Gibbs earned the Tigers a penalty kick when she was hauled down in the box by Glick as they battled for possession of a loose ball near the top of the six-yard box. Glick atoned for her mistake by making an incredible diving save on the ensuing penalty kick taken by Gomez-Junco as the match remained scoreless with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation.

It was a sequence that sparked the Tigers in the attack as they unleashed 11 of their 14 shot attempts in the second half over the final 20 minutes of regulation with the Lady ‘Jack goalkeeper up to the task.

Rookie striker Jorian Baucom was denied on a breakaway opportunity in the 79th minute when she fired a one-time strike from 10 yards in the left side of the area on a brilliant ball played through the defense by fellow striker Summer Clarke. Gomez-Junco tested Glick with a pair of free kicks from just outside the area in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but the Lady ‘Jack shot stopper was again in position for the save.

Gomez-Junco fired a career-high and team-leading 10 shots on the night with four shots on target, while Baucom and Carvery each finished with four attempts to help lead the Tigers in the attack on the night.

Clarke’s effort on a give-and-go with Baucom inside the area just four minutes from time was the final shot on target of the night for either side as they faced the prospect of extra time in a contest that already saw an opening kickoff delayed by an hour with lightning in the area. The Lady ‘Jack defense stifled the Tigers again in the 20 minutes of extra time, limiting the home side to just three shots in sudden death.

The final stat sheet showed the advantage held by the Tigers during the contest as they led 26-15 in total shots, 10-6 in shots on target and 12-4 in corner kicks in what proved to be a defensive struggle throughout.

LSU is now ready to embark on a four-game road swing that takes the team to Provo, Utah, on Thursday night to face the No. 23-ranked BYU Cougars in a match that is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT at BYU’s South Field on the Cougar campus. The Tigers then travel to Durham, North Carolina, on Sunday to face the No. 22-ranked Duke Blue Devils in a match that is set to kick off at noon CT at Koskinen Stadium.
