Tindell Sets Freshman Program Record In Win

September 17, 2013

HONOLULU – Freshman Tabby Tindell etched her name in the FGCU women’s soccer book Sunday by scoring four goals as part of a 5-1 Eagles’ win over Idaho State in the University of Hawai’i Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic.

Tindell (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) set a freshman program record with the four goals. Not only are the four goals the most ever by an FGCU freshman, they are the second-most in program history, bested only by junior transfer Courtney Eppleman’s five goals in FGCU’s first-ever Division I game in August 2007. The eight points by Tindell are also a freshman record and second only to Eppleman’s 10.

The forward tallied her first goal in the 13th minute on a penalty kick and then exploded early in the second half. She scored her second goal just 29 seconds into the second half and completed her hat trick just minutes later at the 46:53 mark. Her fourth goal came in the 54th minute. For the game, the central Florida native attempted just five shots and played only 54 minutes.

In the opening minute of the second stanza, Tindell received a pass from Shannen Wacker (Parker Colo./Ponderosa HS) – one of two Eagles who took over the @FGCU_Soccer Twitter account this week – and fired a shot into the upper-left corner.

Not even two minutes later, Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) – the other Eagle who took over the #AlohaEagles hashtag this week – put a shot on frame that was saved, but careened to Tindell, who recorded the first FGCU hat trick since Wacker last year against Northern Kentucky. The hat trick is just the fourth in FGCU history and second in a non-conference game. In addition to Tindell, Wacker and Eppleman, Katie Donnellan recorded three goals versus USC Upstate in October 2009.

Following Tindell’s fourth tally of afternoon, Kaitlin Parker (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) scored her second goal of the season in the 82nd minute off an assist from Meghan Hayden (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich HS/University of Richmond). Hayden recorded her first assist of the year by sending a ball over the ISU backline onto Parker’s run.

A foul in the box by FGCU in the 89th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Bengals against substitute goalkeeper Emily Dolan (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington). Starting keeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS) was subbed out following the Eagles’ fifth goal. (The box score incorrectly lists Danielle LeRoy (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant HS) as Brown’s sub).

Tindell also had the game-winning assist on FGCU’s lone goal Friday night against Portland State in a 1-0 win. In high school at Trinity Catholic south of Gainesville, Tindell tallied an incredible 160 goals and 80 assists over her four-year career. As only a sophomore, she led the nation with 44 goals and 40 assists for a staggering points tally of 128.

FGCU defeated two teams this weekend, Portland State and Idaho State, by a combined 6-1 margin, and both teams were predicted to share the Big West Conference title this year. The Eagles controlled both contests as on Friday versus Portland State the FGCU backline – anchored by sophomore Emma Blackwell (Jenks, Okla./Jenks HS) and Tessa Berger (Mahurangi East, New Zealand/Epsom Girls Grammar School) – allowed only one shot attempt and none on net all game. On Sunday, FGCU out-shot Idaho State, 19-7, including a 12-2 discrepancy on frame.

After losing its season opener at then-No. 9 Florida by allowing two goals in the final 10 minutes, the Eagles are unbeaten in their last six games, going 5-0-1 in that stretch against three teams picked to win either their conference or division of their conference, and a 2-1 win over Mississippi State.

A video documenting the team’s Hawaii trip will be produced later this week, and fans can also look back on all the action by searching #AlohaEagles on Twitter for tweets, images and more from the seven-day trip. The Green and Blue return to campus on Tuesday and play host to Memphis at the FGCU Soccer Complex Friday night at 7.
