Titans Drop #MetroSeries Tussle To Oakland
DETROIT (9/26/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women' soccer team dropped a hard-fought match, 1-0, to #MetroSeries rival Oakland on Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams came out searching for their first win in Horizon League play and battled to a scoreless draw at halftime. Oakland (1-9-1, 1-1-1 HL) was able to knock one in the net in the 72nd minute right after Detroit Mercy (3-5-3, 0-2-1) had a shot go high on a set piece.
The weather conditions changed as the game went on, shifting from sunny with mild wind to cloudy with strong winds, which affected the overall play in the game.
The game was a toss-up throughout, with both teams going through spells that saw them possess the ball for extended periods of time.
The Golden Grizzlies held a 13-4 advantage in shots with senior Marina Manzo adding to her NCAA leading saves department with three stops, raising her mark to 81 on the year.
Freshman Nasreen Kobeissi had a team-high two shots for the Titans, while junior Casey Couturier and freshman Julie Ann Piechocki had one apiece.
First Half:
- Manzo collected two saves in the first 45 minutes at 31:37 and 42:59
- The Titans did not register a shot in the first half
Second Half:
- The Titans had six corner kicks scattered throughout the period
- Kobeissi had a shot go high in the 64th minute
- Freshman Madison Tzimas made her collegiate debut in the second half at 62:11
- Piechocki had a free-kick sail over the bar from 18-yards out in the 71st minute
Game Notes:
- Oakland now leads the overall series, 14-7-2
- The Titans are now 3-2-1 all-time against Oakland since the inception of the #MetroSeries
- Detroit Mercy had more corner kicks for the third time this season (Purdue Fort Wayne, Madonna)
- Manzo's 81 saves is now 12th in school history in a single season and five away from her career high of 86 she had last year
