UAB Scores 2-1 Exhibition Win Vs. Montevallo

August 22, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Moses Adeniran scored the game-winning goal with under six minutes remaining in regulation, fueling the UAB men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Montevallo in its second exhibition match of the year.

“Similar to the first exhibition, I thought there were moments where we played really well,” head coach Mike Getman said. “At the end of the day, we found a way to win the match. We played against a good opponent, won the game, and got a lot of people some valuable experience. I thought it was a good night for us.”

Like the Blazers’ first exhibition game, the two squads played three 30-minute periods. The Green and Gold came out firing in the first frame, with freshman James Nanje Ngoe scoring his second goal of the preseason in the 19th minute to give the squad a 1-0 advantage.

In the second period, Montevallo’s Bruno Mbamala tallied a goal to knot the score at one apiece. Nearly 50 minutes later, freshman Lars Willemse was taken down outside the Montevallo box, setting up a free kick for Adeniran. The Houston, Texas native buried the shot, sealing the match for UAB.

“We got a lot of young guys a lot of minutes tonight,” added Getman. “I was really pleased about that. I thought they all did well. They showed they have some things to learn. We did make mistakes, but these games are about learning. We got minutes to people so they could learn. Overall, I thought the group did well and I was pleased with them.”

Redshirt freshmen Joe Kuzminksy and Hunter Weber were two of those younger players to see time. The two split time in goal for the Blazers. Kuzminsky made two saves in 60 minutes, while Weber stopped one in the final frame.

The Green and Gold will complete exhibition play on Saturday night when they host Jacksonville. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
