UCSD Men Handle Coyotes at Home, 4-0

October 4, 2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego scored a pair of goals in either half and added a latest chapter to its recent home domination of Cal State San Bernardino, 4-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s soccer match at Triton Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.

Three of the Tritons’ goals came via header, with three on free-kick organizations. Three of the four goal-scorers notched the first of their college careers.

In their first game since students finally arrived back on campus for Thursday’s start to the fall quarter, the Tritons played in front of a season-high 792 fans.

UCSD improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. In losing a third straight to open league play after four straight wins to begin its campaign, Cal State San Bernardino fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA.

The Tritons moved to 4-0-1 against the Coyotes over the last five years in La Jolla since a 2-1 CSUSB win in 2009. The Coyotes haven’t scored at Triton Soccer Stadium in 468:40, and in 392:35 regardless of site.

UCSD opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Brandon Bauman’s right-sided free kick was tapped in from close range with fourth-year senior outside back Matthew McClure earning credit for his first collegiate score. Alessandro Canale had drawn the foul ahead of the free kick.

The Tritons doubled their advantage right before the halftime whistle, at 43:44. Once again, it was from a free kick on the right side, this time by freshman winger Sean PleskowRiley Harbour rose at the base of the back post and headed the ball downward underneath the Coyote goalkeeper and into the net for his first college goal. The assist marked Pleskow’s first career point.

The result was put out of doubt late, with Pleskow nodding home Bauman’s right-sided free kick to open his college goal-scoring account at 74:57. In the 81st minute, Eric Young was present at the near post to get his head on fellow freshman Uly de la Cal’s cross from the left. It was Young’s second, and de la Cal’s first college assist.

Bauman finished with his second two-assist game of 2014 and fourth of his two-year Triton career following a transfer from Orange Coast College.

Canale wound up with a game-high five shots as UCSD took 14 in all while allowing just three attempts to the Coyotes. Canale had a busy first half, in particular, with two efforts going high of the target before a close-range header went wide to the right. He also provided a pinpoint through ball up the middle of the field for strike partnerMalek Bashti to run onto, but CSUSB goalie Roberto Gonzalez was first to pounce and deny the goal-scoring opportunity in the 20th minute.

Canale expertly juked his defender before putting a low shot from the left edge toward the near post in the 72nd minute, only for Gonzalez to dive to his right and deflect the ball to a corner kick.

Cal State San Bernardino came closest to scoring in the 78th when Larry Llamas’ right-footed bullet rattled off the crossbar and away.

Cameron McElfresh was not called upon to make a single save in achieving his fourth shutout, all coming over the last six matches. Gonzalez had two stops.

Young started for the first time on the right wing. Redshirt freshman Dan Glascock earned his college debut over the last eight minutes.

The Tritons have posted a pair of 4-0 victories this season.

UCSD travels north next to take on archrival Chico State on Sunday, Oct. 5. Kickoff at University Soccer Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m. The Wildcats (5-3-1, 0-3) remained winless in the CCAA with a 2-1 home defeat to No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
