September 17, 2016

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer extended their unbeaten streak extended to four games with a 2-1 come from behind victory against the George Washington Colonials in overtime on Saturday. Sophomore Tyler Ward (Buford, Ga./Mill Creek) got the game winner and first goal of his career with nine seconds left in overtime to lift UMBC to victory, as they move to 2-1-3 on the year.

"This was a great team win. We wanted to come out and play a great game in front of a big crowd," head coach Pete Caringi Jr. said after the win. "We have a lot of young players and played a lot of guys today. Everyone played well, and we got a great result."

The Colonials got the scoring started in the 39th minute, as Christian Lawal put his shot past UMBC keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) off a long pass from Oliver De Their to put GW up 1-0 late in the first half.

UMBC fought back in the second half, after a couple of good chances, the Retrievers found the equalizer off the head of junior Sammy Kahsai(Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern). Kahsai took a long pass from freshmanJon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) and put it past GW keeper Thor Arne Hofs.

Ward gave UMBC the victory after the ball found his foot six yards out, after a header from Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) and a cross from Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England/Ryburn Valley).

The Retrievers outshot the Colonials, 19-13, while also holding an advantage in corner kicks, 6-5. Heavner made three saves in net to pick up his second win of the year. Hauck led all players with seven shots in the contest.

George Washington came out early controlling much of the play. They had a chance in the early minutes where a cross bent off the right post.

Then the UMBC offense came to life. Junior Gregg Hauck had a pair of chances right inside the box. His first opportunity came off a Cormac Noel corner, that just went past the right post. The next chance came inside the box that was blocked.

Freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) had a beautiful cross intended for Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) go just past his foot, as the game remained level.

UMBC returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 20 with a home match against Howard at 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
