BURLINGTON, Vt. – UMBC junior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) matched a season-best with 10 saves in Thursday’s America East matchup at Virtue Field, but for the second straight season, UMBC and Vermont ended in a draw after 110 minutes of action. Kadet picked up her third shutout of the season and the fifth of her career in the scoreless affair.   

UMBC earns its fourth tie of the season – the second-straight campaign the Retrievers have had four overtime games – to move to 1-9-4 overall and 0-3-2 in America East play, while Vermont moves to 2-11-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference.

Despite being outshot 8-0 in the first half, UMBC put the pressure on the Catamounts coming out of the break. Freshman forward Bria Bass (Springfield, Va.) nearly put the Retrievers out in front on a shot from 10 yards out in the 49th minute, but a UVM tip deflected the shot and gave UMBC the first corner kick of the afternoon. Minutes later, junior forward Stephanie Smith (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tested Vermont’s freshman goalkeeper Ally Ramos, blasting a curling shot from just inside the box. Ramos made the diving save, her first of the contest, to keep the game scoreless.   

The Catamounts weathered the storm, but the Retrievers went back on the offensive with under 10 minutes remaining in the contest, coming inches from taking the 1-0 advantage, as a centering pass from sophomore midfielder Lilly Rydon (Stirling, South Australia/Concordia College) made its way to freshman midfielder Preslie Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Quaranta turned and punched a shot to the left side of the net from six yards out, but Ramos was able to get her fingertips on it for one of her seven saves.

UMBC held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, with nine coming in the second half of play, including one with six seconds remaining in regulation, however, the Retrievers were unable to find the back of the net.

Vermont saw the first opportunity of overtime, as sophomore forward Bre Pletnik had a step on the Retriever defense and sent a shot from just inside the 18 yard box. Kadet extended to get a hand on the ball and was able to gather the rebound, for the first of three saves in the first overtime for the junior keeper.

Both teams continued to generate opportunities throughout the two overtimes, with the Catamounts registering four shots in the first overtime and UMBC combining for three shots during the extra periods.

UMBC returns home on Sunday, Oct. 14 to take on Stony Brook in its “Fight In Pink” contest. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers invite all fans to purchase a pink shirt from the team to show their support in the fight against breast cancer, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
