UNCG Shuts Out Longwood 1-0 on the Road

August 31, 2018

FARMVILLE, Va. – UNCG women’s soccer (3-1-1) picked up its first road and shutout win of the 2018 season with a 1-0 victory over the Longwood Lancers (1-3-1) Friday night at Longwood Athletics Complex. Cienna Rideout scored the game’s only goal in the 29th minute.

"I'm very proud of the ladies because they had a tremendous performance from start to finish," said head coach Michael Coll. "We controlled the game and deserved to win since we were keyed in the entire 90 minutes. Besides hitting the post in the second half and some great saves by Longwood's goalkeeper, we could have easily won by a few more goals."

Rideout goal came off a pass from midfield from Emily Jensen. She dribbled down and scored just above the box. Since making her debut last Friday in the 3-1 victory at Richmond, she has scored a goal in all three games played.

"Cienna is a goal-scorer and very hungry player," said Coll. "She's very technically sound and she's going to hit the target if given the chance. When she gets behind the back line, we know she's going to score. Teams need goal scorers to be successful, and she's as good as anybody."

After the goal, the Spartans controlled the majority of the possession. They put early pressure on the Lancers to start the second half with three of four shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the half. Goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (3-1-1) didn’t make her first save until the 59th minute.

UNCG finished with a 13-10 shots and 7-3 corner kicks advantage. Rideout and Jordin Mosley led the Spartans with three shots each. Gracie Timbario, Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir and Nicole Souply all notched a shot on goal.

Tyler-Cooper finished with three saves for her second shutout of the year.

UNCG will return home to play another Big South Conference school, Triad rival High Point, on Labor Day at 7 p.m.
