UNCW EDGES ODU 2-1 IN OVERTIME
NORFOLK, VA—Jamie Dell’s goal with 5:20 left in overtime to give the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion University Saturday night at the ODU Soccer Complex, ending ODU’s three-game winning streak. The Monarchs are now 3-3 and UNCW improves to 5-1-1.
“Thought it was a game that could have gone either way.” said Alan Dawson. “ I am not disappointed in tonight’s performance, just the result. It was a tough one to lose, but they are a very good team and they are not 5-1-1 for nothing. We have to move on and get ready for VCU next week.”
The Monarchs struck first 11 minutes into the match as junior Ryan Condotta scored off an assist from sophomore Nicholas Hutchinson’s free kick.
Seven minutes later, Jamie Dell scored off an assist from Jake VanCompernolle’s throw in to tie the match at 1-1 and there it stayed into halftime and through regulation.
In the overtime, Dell got a long ball from Michael Mecham then scored into the left corner to give the Seahawks the golden-goal win.
UNCW outshot ODU 14-13 overall and 8-7 in shots on goal, while the Monarchs goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen had six saves as did UNCW’s Sean Melvin.
The Monarchs return to action next Friday night in Richmond against VCU. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Sportsbackers stadium.
