Utah Valley defeats UNLV, 2-1

September 2, 2016

OREM, Utah—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team extended its unbeaten home streak to 12 matches with a 2-1 win over UNLV Friday night at Clyde Field.

Utah Valley improves to 4-1-0 overall on the season and a perfect 2-0-0 at home this year. The last time Utah Valley dropped a home match was on Nov. 1, 2014.  The loss is the first setback of the season for UNLV, which falls to 4-1-0 on the year.

"We knew it would be a tight match," said Utah Valley head coach Brent Anderson. "The team played really well in the first half. Obviously that's where we did the damage and scored the goals. In the second half, UNLV pushed and gave us a lot more pressure. Our girls did a good job of handling it. I thought we could have played a little better in the second half but what's most important is that we came away with the win and stayed undefeated at Clyde Field this year."

Kalli Suesue gave the Wolverines and early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Sara Callister dribbled through a defender's legs near the end line on the right side and passed it into the box where Suesue one-touched it past the keeper and into the back of the net for the score. The goal was the first of the season for the senior defender and the second of her career.

Utah Valley took a 2-0 advantage in the 22nd minute after Abby Jameson found a deflected corner kick near the top of the box and fired it off the left post and into the back of the net. It marks the second goal of the season for Jameson, who also scored in the home win over Southern Utah last week.

UNLV's Lily Sender scored the Rebels' lone goal of the match in the 77th minute.

After out-shooting UNLV 8-2 in the first half, the Rebels out-shot UVU 10-2 in the second period. Suesue, Breanna McCarter and Breanna DeWaal led the Wolverines with two shots a piece on the night. Both of Suesue's shots were on target.

Brooklyn Nielsen picked up her second win of the season in the box, improving to a perfect 2-0-0 on the year. The freshman keeper registered an impressive eight saves.

The Wolverines now travel to play a pair of Mountain West Conference foes next week. UVU will take on Wyoming on Sept. 9 in Laramie before traveling to play Colorado College on Sept. 11 in Colorado Springs.
