Vermont Fends Off Saints
Vermont was awarded a penalty kick in the 64th minute and Aly Spencer converted for the decisive tally as the Catamounts defeated Siena Women’s Soccer 1-0 in Burlington. Taylor Dorado made five saves for the Saints which dropped their non-conference finale.
Siena (3-5-2, 0-0-1) held a 14-11 advantage in shots and a 5-2 margin in corners. Following a scoreless first half, the Saints controlled play over the final 45 minutes. Siena out-shot Vermont (2-5-2) 11-5 while attempting all four corners in the stanza.
But midway through the second half, the Catamounts were given an opportunity to take the lead and took advantage. Spencer finished her penalty low and hard inside the left post to improve to a perfect 3-for-3 in attempts on the young season and send Vermont to its first win over the Saints since 2006.
Lydia Kessel made six saves in goal to post the clean sheet for the Catamounts which snapped Siena’s 11-match unbeaten streak in the series (9-0-2).
Deanna Lomino led the Saints offensively putting three of her team-high four targets on goal, while Jayanna Monds added three shots.
Siena resumes conference play Wednesday when the Saints host Niagara at 3 p.m.
