Warhawks Win; Advance to WIAC Semifinal

November 3, 2015

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament play with a 4-0 win over UW-Stout on Tuesday in Whitewater. The first round win propels the Warhawks, 15-4, to a semifinal rematch with UW-La Crosse. The Eagles topped UW-W at home back on October 17 snapping a 33-game WIAC regular season winning streak by the Warhawks.

Tuesday night's scoring began in the 18th minute of play.Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) corralled a loose ball and sent a left-footed cross into the box.Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) timed her leap and struck the ball with her head to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

The Warhawks continued with offensive pressure as the half wore on. Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had the best opportunity in the 34th minute but her shot was just wide and hit the post.

The Warhawk offense came out of halftime looking to extend their lead. Reid took another shot four minutes into the second half, but the post again denied her the goal.

Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) scored an unassisted goal eleven seconds later for a 2-0 Warhawk cushion.

Reid finally broke into the scoring column, knocking in her 18th goal of the season on a pass from Lesperance in the 58th minute.

Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) got in on the scoring in the 60th minute when she capitalized on a through ball from Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) to give the Warhawks a 4-0 lead.

The final thirty minutes of play saw heavy substitutions by both teams. Head Coach Ryan Quamme saw the opportunity to save legs as he played 28 players in the match. "With the potential for three games in five days we had the opportunity to manage some minutes," Quamme stated after the match.

Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) played the entire match in goal for the Warhawks making two saves and earning her fifth shutout of the season.

Quamme added, "I liked our energy and focus, and I felt we executed our game plan pretty well."

The Warhawks will need that same energy and focus when they travel to UW-La Crosse on Thursday. The match is slated to begin at 6 pm with the winner advancing to the WIAC tournament championship match at the site of the highest remaining seed. The Warhawks, the tournament's three seed, will need to win their match and for fourth-seeded UW-Eau Claire to beat top-seeded UW-Oshkosh in order to host the championship match.

The winner of the WIAC tournament earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.
