ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team defeated The Citadel 1-0 Wednesday evening on the strength of Grace Radler's first career goal for the Lady Eagles at Eagle Field.

Winthrop improves its record to 2-4 overall, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-5 overall on the season.

“I felt we played quite well in the first half” said head coach Spencer Smith. “We created good opportunities and were precise in the final third but could have been better.  This was a good win and we will continue to try and get better”

In a scoreless first half, the Lady Eagles were the aggressors leading in shots 8-5.  Krystyna Freda led all players with four shots, as two shots troubled The Citadel goalkeeper Sarah Katchen.  Lady Eagles' goalkeeper Ameila Henderson also recorded two saves in the first half.

Winthrop got off to a fast start in the second half when Radler scored her first career goal in the 49th minute. Jessica Logan played in a free kick from 40 yards which was flicked on by Megan David to Radler who was waiting at the far post. Radler's shot went back across the goal beating Katchen. Logan and David each earned their first career assists on the play.

The Citadel's best chance to draw even came in the 84th minute when a knuckling free kick from Vanessa Aponte forced a save by Henderson.

Freda led all players with six shots on the evening and four shots on goal. Jannel Johnson led the way for the Bulldogs with five shots and two on goal for the evening. Henderson ended the game with five saves en route to earning her first collegiate shutout. Katchen finished the game with four saves in net for The Citadel.

Winthrop returns to action on Friday, September 14 at 7 p.m. when they host Francis Marion at Eagle Field.
