Women’s Soccer Disposes of Flagler

August 23, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s soccer team got its 2013 campaign off on the right foot, dominating every phase of the game and claiming a 6-0 win over the Flagler Saints on Friday night from Southern Oak Stadium. The Dolphins took the lead within the first three minutes of the match and were never threatened thereafter, outshooting the Saints 32-1.

The game-winning goal came courtesy of a corner kick delivery from Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez. The curling ball might have possibly scored without a touch, but Kaitlyn Bassett was there to nod it home for good measure.

Applying loads of pressure in the opening minutes, Jacksonville added a second tally before the match was eight minutes old. After being forced deep into their own half again, Flagler gave up a fourth corner kick to Cataldo-Ramirez and the Dolphins. Perhaps wary of the aerial capabilities of Bassett, the Saints’ defense sagged into the six-yard box, allowing Cataldo-Ramirez to play the ball out high to Mary Sturgis. Given a free look from the top of the box, the freshman coolly hit a strike into the upper netting for a 2-0 edge before the break.

Flagler found a bit of footing as the first half wore on, but never provided much work for the goalkeeping tandem of Jill D’Amico and Sarah Sierra, neither of whom had to produce a save on the night. After a couple of frustrating misses in front of open nets, the Dolphins once again found the back of the net just past the hour mark. This time it was Lindsay Forrest who notched her first career goal, cutting in from the right side and knocking one past Kaeta Choquette.

Just a few minutes later, Marie Weckhurst got involved in the action. Sloppy passing in the back half from the Saints resulted in a turnover and a goal from the sophomore that ended all doubt.

Late on in the match, Meghan Kelley scored her first career goal to make it a 5-0 game. With less than a minute remaining, a weighted pass from Brooke Comans in midfield freed freshman Cassie Elmore on a run down the left side. Elmore corralled the ball, cut back and blasted a shot to the top of the goal that gave Choquette no chance, putting a stamp on the night and the 6-0 final.

Jacksonville returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Southern Oak Stadium. The Miami Hurricanes – 2-0 winners over Cincinnati on Friday night – make the trip north as the Dolphins try for their first 2-0-0 start to a season since 1998.
