Wyoming Soccer Hosts New Mexico and San Diego State

Cowgirls Continue Mountain West Action

 

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 9, 2013) -- The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team returns home to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex to face New Mexico and San Diego State this weekend. Kickoff against the Lobos is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, while Sunday’s contest against the Aztecs will begin at 1 p.m.

The Cowgirls (4-8-1, 1-2 Mountain West) are coming off back-to-back losses after opening conference play with a 3-0 victory over Colorado State on Sept. 29. Last weekend, UW lost 2-1 to Boise State and 1-0 against Utah State. In Boise, junior forward Sara Paul scored Wyoming’s lone goal of the match. Senior forward Olivia Mohtadi led the Cowgirls with three shots, while junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm made three saves in the net. Against Utah State, Boehm once again had three saves, as Paul, senior forward Lucie McDowell and junior midfielder Alison Clarke each recorded two shots during the match.

“The way the conference looks, I think anybody can beat anybody,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “When you look at their scores, that is exactly what it shows and when you look at our scores, that also is what it shows. It’s all about us, and how we do the little things, clean up our attack and finish those chances.”

With seven conference games remaining, the Cowgirls lead the MW in points with 53. UW’s 20 goals lead the conference for an average of 1.54 per game. Wyoming’s 13 assists have it sitting third and three behind the conference leader, UNLV.

McDowell has 31 shots, six goals and 13 points in 2013. Sophomore Mollee Ramsay is one of five Cowgirls to start all 13 games so far this season and has three goals off 15 shots. Paul has also recorded three goals and leads the squad in assists with five. Boehm has played every minute and recorded 49 stops as goalkeeper.

New Mexico (5-7-1) is 3-0 in the Mountain West. In their most recent action, the Lobos defeated Colorado State 3-0 last Sunday. Sophomore keeper Cassie Ulrich has made 57 saves protecting the goal for New Mexico, while on the offensive side of the ball the Lobos are led by two sophomore midfielders, Lindsey Guice and Dylann O’Connor, who have four and three goals, respectively.

San Diego State (5-5-2) is also 3-0 in the Mountain West and defeated Colorado State 3-0 in its most recent action. The Aztecs have sophomore Melanie Vaughn protecting the goal, with 42 saves this season. Junior forward Hannah Keane has twice been named MW Offensive Player of the Week and leads San Diego State with eight goals.

The Cowgirls are 5-13-4 all-time against the Lobos and 3-12-1 against the Aztecs. The last meeting between UW and New Mexico was Oct. 21 of last season where the Lobos stole a 2-1 victory by scoring the game winner with a little more than a minute remaining. Mohtadi scored in the 24th minute to give the Cowgirls an early lead. Last season against San Diego State, a pair of second-half goals downed the Cowgirls as they fell 3-1 to the Aztecs.  Ramsay scored the lone goal for UW off a free kick from Liz O’Reilly.

Friday’s match will feature a Homecoming t-shirt giveaway and Sunday is Wyoming Soccer Day. The first 200 fans on Friday will receive a 2013 Homecoming t-shirt as the program welcomes back all past soccer players and on Sunday all youth soccer players wearing soccer jerseys will receive free admission.
